About National Seals

Founded in 1899 in Detroit, Michigan, National is one of the top manufacturers and suppliers of OEM and aftermarket oil seals for automotive, commercial, marine, industrial, and agricultural applications. Originally known for its line of wheel bearings, Federal-Mogul gradually expanded into oil seal manufacturing, using its engineering expertise and dedication for precision to create long-life, high-performance seals.

Today, Federal-Mogul sells all of its seals under its Powertrain division with the National Seals branding. National offers an extensive range of oil seals, including crankshaft and camshaft seals, wheel end seals, transmission and axle seals, and transmission piston seals. Each seal is engineered to meet or exceed the original equipment specifications and is constantly updated to meet the demands of today’s heavy duty vehicles. • Dynamic Edge

Dirt and other contaminants are a constant problem for oil seals, which is why Federal-Mogul has developed the Dynamic Edge technology to protect its seals. Exclusive to National oil seals, Dynamic Edge is a revolutionary contaminant exclusion system designed to deflect dirt and moisture from wheel end components.

The key to Dynamic Edge is its distinct seal design: it creates a “pumping” action that constantly pushes dirt away from the seal. Four floating contact points deflect any particle or moisture, with a single spring-loaded sealing lip serving as the main contact point. The entire seal is also made of a single piece of abrasion and puncture-resistant nitrile rubber, giving it improved structural integrity as well as making installation an easier task.

• Sure-Lock ID

Another innovation that provides additional leak protection in National seals is the Sure-Lock ID rib technology. Exclusive to National wheel end oil seals, Sure-Lock consists of specially designed ribs on the inner and outer diameter of the seal. These ribs serve as multiple barriers from outside contamination as well as prevent bore and shaft leaks. The seal’s outer diameter is also reinforced with metal to help keep it in place in the hub bore.

Crankshaft and camshaft seals

Federal-Mogul crankshaft and camshaft seals are available in a wide variety of material compositions and designs to match the demands of various types of commercial vehicle engines.

MicroTorq seals. Designed for maximum fuel efficiency, the MicroTorq seal reduces friction by up to 70 percent compared to conventional lip-type seals. This results in improved fuel economy of up to 0.49 percent and a reduction in CO2 emissions by 1-2 g/km than traditional seals. Their compact design also allows MicroTorq seals to be packaged in under 5mm without changing the design of adjacent components, making them especially ideal for smaller, lightweight engines.

Elastomeric seals. National's elastomeric seals offer a traditional sealing solution for those looking for a tried-and-tested design but with the latest high-performance elastomers. There's a National elastomeric seal that's right for the job from polyacrylates to ethylene acrylic elastomers. Federal-Mogul also manufactures specialty FKM elastomeric seals with distinct properties such as low-temperature resistance and AFLAS elastomers for longer seal life. Each elastomeric seal incorporates various technologies, including pumping lay-down lips and spring-loaded micro-lip seals that extend its performance boundaries.

PTFE seals. National's bonded PTFE seals are designed for heavy-duty performance under demanding applications. These seals can withstand temperatures from -40° C to an excess of 200° C and are compatible with most modern synthetic lubricants. Their single-piece construction and lay-down sealing lip design also ensure an extended seal life even with shaft imperfections, misalignment, or excessive shaft motion.

Unitized seals. The National unitized or cartridge seal consists of multiple seal components assembled into a single unit. These combined sealing interfaces offer several benefits, including easier shaft preparation, reduced risk of installation and handling damage, and improved sealing reliability.

Flat-install seals. One of Federal Mogul's exclusive designs, the Flat-Install seals offers versatile heavy-duty performance for many applications. The seal is designed for extreme service life, with an official rating of one million miles in simulated bench testing. To achieve this, the seals feature various innovations, including a special "dirt labyrinth" that traps contaminants before they reach the sealing surface and integrated wear sleeves to accommodate rougher crankshaft surfaces. Its unitized design also simplifies installation and allows the seal to mount flush to the block without using complex assembly tooling.

Bonded piston seals

Federal Mogul's rubber-to-metal bonded servo and clutch piston seals have a compact, one-piece design that significantly reduces potential sources of leaks, simplifies assembly, and improves reliability overall. Servo pistons are also available as a single-piece hydraulic component or as a fully assembled module with return springs and cap, eliminating the hassle of multiple-component supply and assembly.

Wheel end seals

Federal-Mogul offers both standard elastomeric and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) seals for heavy-duty wheel end applications. The elastomeric wheel end seals provide a tried-and-tested performance suitable for most trucks and trailers at an accessible price point. But with the increasing demands of today's heavy-duty axle applications, Federal Mogul's PTFE wheel end seals deliver performance and durability that's above and beyond the industry standards. The structural composition of PTFE seals makes them highly resistant to chemicals, including modern synthetic lubricants. Their operating temperature range is -40° C to an excess of 200° C. And their main sealing lip provides sufficient contact area to accommodate wheel end movement.

Transmission seals

The chemical composition of modern transmission and driveline fluids means transmission seals have to adapt to new materials. Federal-Mogul's transmission seal lineup includes seals made of nitrile butadeine rubber (NBR), low-temperature FKM that remains flexible even in extremely low temperatures of -40°C, and AFLAS base-resistant elastomers for use in high-performance transmission units. Federal-Mogul also offers unitized pinion seals for increased temperature, fluid, and abrasion resistance and booted transmission seals with a special sealing lip that protects against undercarriage contamination.

Gaskets

In addition to oil seals, Federal-Mogul also manufactures heavy duty gaskets for truck and trailer axles. Each gasket features a signature blue non-stick coating that greatly reduces friction and cuts down on cleanup when disassembled. The facing is made of special aramid fiber that provides excellent fluid stability, while the laminated solid steel core provides superior crush resistance and is highly resistant to tearing during installation. Each gasket is also designed to provide superior torque retention over thick paper gaskets, resulting in a long-lasting axle seal.
