About Workhorse

Workhorse is an American company that specializes in the development and manufacture of electric-powered delivery and utility vehicles. Investors who took over production and sales of General Motors' popular P-series Stepvan chassis started it in 1998 as Workhorse Custom Chassis. Seven years later, Navistar, a leading manufacturer of buses, commercial trucks, defense vehicles, and engines, acquired it. Workhorse was a Navistar company for five years—it was in 2012 when Navistar decided to shutter its Workhorse plant to cut costs after suffering heavy losses.

In March 2013, AMP Electric Vehicles—an Ohio-based company delivering all-electric vehicles that work in the real world—acquired the Workhorse brand and the Workhorse Custom Chassis assembly plant in Union City, IN. Under AMP, Workhorse started offering a range of vehicles. In March 2015, the name Workhorse Custom Chassis was changed to Workhorse Group Incorporated, with Co-founder and CEO Steve Burns leading the company. Burns resigned four years after and was replaced by President and COO Duane Hughes.

Currently, the Workhorse Group develops and manufactures battery-electric power trains for its new chassis in its 50,000 sq. ft. facility in Loveland, Ohio. The company uses only proven, automotive-grade, mass-produced parts combined with its custom-designed, proprietary control software in producing its products to ensure superior performance and reliability. Meanwhile, in its 200,000 sq. ft. assembly plant in Union City, Indiana, Workhorse produces and assembles its Class 3-6 Workhorse brand medium-duty truck chassis.
